THE STAR TEACHER TIPS
Playing games in Oregon - Kara
"I play the 'Say Hello game.' Once a student has learned people identification in Level II, this game teaches them to initiate a greeting. When the student arrives to school I put the 'Say Hello Game' template on their desk or in their cubby. The template I use is a penny board with pictures of teachers or peers taped to it. In order to receive the penny the student has to find the person in the picture and say 'hi ____(name),' That person says hi back and gives the student a penny!" .
Using Computers in Texas- Cynthia
"I use the computer when we are trying to generalize the 'sight word match to picture' in level II. We teach the student to type on a computer the 5 red objects (car, cup, bowl, spoon, block) using the words as a model. Eventually we have the student type the words when prompted with the picture of the 5 red objects. This works for all different sight words."
Lending a hand in Washington- Sarah
"In order to get my students to line up independently, I started using "do this" commands. I put paper hands on the wall and I say 'do this' and show them how to match their hand to the paper hand. All the students end up in a line and they've learned to generalize a 'do this' command!"
